Well, Irving tries with that, going from one outlandishly bizarre situation to the next. Book 4 in my John Irving Challenge, and the best one yet. There is some damn fine writing going on here. James Agee is one of them.

It’s a very wered way of critiquing one’s own work.

I might be too dim to realise that dee was the author’s intention, or even too dim to see a bigger message here, but it seems that this novel goes so far into not taking itself seriously that I can only surmise that this was just a great big wank for Irving.


He’s kind of dead. I always read through the pages no matter how upsetting because something better might happen, or something else. While I am critical of the motives of the author and story there is still a lot to enjoy here.

There really is a sort of characteristic richness to American literature that separates their body of work from other countries, and there is no better writer who exemplifies this literary richness like John Irving.

Ma adesso passiamo ad “Il mondo secondo Garp”. Arguably his most famous book but that can be debatedand certainly the first of his then-four novels to ve through to a mainstream commercial hit, it holds a soft spot in my heart because of the movie version starring Robin Williams, which came out right in the same years that my Midwestern suburb got cable for the first time, which makes it one of the movies on heavy rotation back then that had such a profound impact on me as a pre- and early-teen, back before the proliferation of video rental stores.

I think I may be too young for this book. And even if it wasn’t, I might still give it five stars, because it has other merits which make its literary quality far higher than that of the average bestselling novel, and even certain classics, assuming, of course, that Garp has not already advanced its way to classic status by now, even though most of Irving’s other work is, like that of the titular character, maligned by many, I would even venture to say a majority of, people.

That shows amazing craftsmanship and dedication to ovlgens art, in my opinion. I was very underwhelmed with this book, both with the unimaginative “semi-autobiographical” cop-out of a plot and with the unlikeable characters. The other reactions I’ve gotten range from “You’ll grow out of it once you find the right person” to “You are deathly ill and need to go to a doctor immediately because there is no possibility ggarp any living human can live without sexual attraction.

I shouldn’t demean the Victorians; they had it all over her. Funny and tragic at the same time.
