You could say “creative”, but all authors are creative. At Arisiathe January science fiction convention in Boston that I attend and present at every year, there’s often a panel called “Read All the Things! David is one of the prototypes, but not quite to the satisfaction of his parents. David’s personality is similar to that of an average 5- to year-old boy, as he is curious, slightly mischievous, and very loving towards Monica.

The best in this compilation was the famous “AI” inspiration, the 3 supertoys pieces I really enjoyed, I liked the writing, the narrative, the ideas, the emotions. I don’t recall having ever read Aldiss before, and I’m not likely to try to read him again, alas. I thought they fit the style and tone of the collection just as well as any other. I sympathised with Monica for her depression in such a cold and vapid world filled with riches and machines that couldn’t give her what she really wanted.
It is difficult to say how much of David’s “feelings” are programmed, but the questioning of his own reality defines the character as more than an average android. However, in the movie, David never has that moment of realization that he’s an android. These very short stories each is 2, words or less depict the story of David, an android who is created for a childless couple, but whose quest for self-identity proves problematic and he eventually leaves to wander the city.
When they get permission to have a child of their own they do away with David. If these ideas occurred in one story, than correct you would be.
